The Pride of a Nation is the 26th chapter of the "The Legend of Lü Bu" manga series.

Summary[]

Cesc body carried

Cesc's corpse is carried away from the arena

Lü Bü leaves the arena as Cesc’s corpse is carried out on a stretcher. The older members of the audience are left in awe of Lü Bü’s immense strength. Watching the fight, Narcissus feels inspired by Lü Bü’s unwavering determination. In that moment, he resolves never to depend on anyone again—not even the gods. The Coro siblings take the stage once more, announcing the beginning of the second semifinal and introducing the fighters.

First, they present the gladiator from the west—Tanaos, the assassin hurricane. Known for riding his horse like the wind and hunting his enemies like a lion, Tanaos is the supreme king who once terrorized Greece. As he enters the arena, Tanaos wonders aloud what kind of texture the meat of a bloody Spartan would have.

Opposing him on the other side is the gladiator from the east—Gryps, Sparta’s masterpiece. He hails from what is regarded as the land of the most powerful warriors in history: Sparta.

The Coro siblings announce the start of the battle. Before engaging, the fighters exchange words. Tanaos mockingly asks who Gryps really is, pointing out that Sparta fell 500 years ago. Gryps, undeterred, replies with pride that Sparta will never die. Tanaos then leaps high into the air, aiming to strike from behind.

A flashback recounts the legacy of Sparta, the most formidable military city in history. In Sparta, children were subjected to relentless training, and only the strongest were recognized as soldiers. With a mere 300 troops, King Leonidas once intercepted the 300,000-man Persian army, securing their place in history. Though Greece eventually fell to the Roman Empire, the spirit of Sparta endured. Even 500 years after its fall, Sparta’s blood and pride still live on. From this enduring legacy, Gryps was born—the man who inherited the soul of Leonidas. Driven by a dream to embody Leonidas’s strength and honor, Gryps trained relentlessly day after day. No matter how injured he was or how much blood he spilled, he never stopped. People admired him so deeply that they began calling him Sparta’s masterpiece.

Back in the arena, with one swift move, Gryps turns mid-battle and impales Tanaos with his spear while he is still in the air. As Tanaos collapses lifelessly, Gryps’ helmet falls to the ground, revealing his face to the stunned crowd.

The Coro siblings announce Gryps as the victor of the second semifinal.
