Repose of Souls is the 30th chapter of the "Shuumatsu no Valkyrie: Record of Ragnarok" manga series.
Summary[]
Heimdall officially declares that Jack the Ripper is the winner of Round 4 of Ragnarok. As Jack solemnly looks up at the sky, his gloves deform and Hlökk appears behind Jack, covered in blood. Jack asks how she's doing, but Hlökk turns the question around, wanting to know how Jack feels after killing a God. Jack admits he doesn't know and calls this a mysterious feeling. Sighing, Hlökk is in disbelief that Jack can't even act sad when he is, calling him a pitiable man.
Annoyed that she's all covered in blood, Hlökk goes off to get a shower and orders Jack to get himself to the infirmary. Picking up his hat, Jack begins walking to the exit and recalls Heracles' kind words. Putting on his hat, Jack expresses how he wishes he could see Heracles one more time. As the audience stayed in a whirlpool of violent emotion, what they swung towards the victor were not words of praise, but scorn. After Jack winces in pain and kneels down, the citizens of Thebes begin hurling rocks at him, shouting at him to give Heracles back to them.
Castor questions how Heracles could lose to a man like Jack and is about to hurl a rock himself, only to recall how Heracles wouldn't want it, resulting in Castor going on his knees. Still smoking his pipe, Arthur Conan Doyle states that Jack the Ripper's infinite malice ended up consuming a God as well and calls him a monster. However, William Shakespeare disagrees and tells them not to avert their eyes, for Jack is but a Human as well. Smiling through the pain, Jack stands up and continues going through the exit as Anne smiles down at him. Meanwhile, Loki sighs about how it's another win for Humanity and guesses that Jack finalized his plan when he initially grappled up the church.
Even though it looked like he was in a dire situation, it was all still a part of his plan. He calculated his point of impact on the metal fence to make sure it wasn't fatal, all to make them believe that the metal spike was going to be his final weapon. But his true plan was to sustain an injury to gather enough blood to pierce Heracles through himself. Loki states that Jack deceived them all, including Heracles, but Hermes says it wasn't as easy as it sounds.
If he were in his shoes, Hermes admits he wouldn't have staked his life on such a gamble and Loki believes that Jack thought that's how far he needed to go, in order to defeat Heracles. Loki calls him a formidable man but Ares insists that those words should be reserved for Heracles, who never gave up, even at the end. Though he cries, Ares states that as Heracles' friend, he too will stand tall and look ahead. Sighing, Zeus suddenly destroys most of the viewing room and insists that they can't let Humanity get even the slightest lead on them. As Loki questions who will be sent next, Göll cries over Heracles' death. When Brunhilde begins walking away, Göll angrily asks if she's satisfied, with Heracles dying to that "monster".
Brunhilde mentions how the title of "Valkyrie" means "Chooser of the Slain" and thus, in order to save Humanity, they need to ensure success. She asserts that success is all that matters but Göll notices how Brunhilde is clenching her right hand, so hard, that she begins bleeding. Brunhilde walks off, leaving Göll silent. After walking for a bit, Brunhilde enters into a locked room. Inside, there are two pictures of Lü Bu and Adam, with a cup and an offering beside each. Filling up another cup, Brunhilde enshrines Heracles' picture and notes that he wouldn't mind her doing this. Crying, Brunhilde asks for Heracles to "wait for [her] there" as she'll be joining him soon. Deep within the arena, are the reserve chambers for Humanity's fighters. There are different doors for each fighter, such as a door with a sefirot symbol, a gate with a giant lock and a vault.
Behind two dojo-like doors, two men watch the aftermath of Round 4. One notes that was a death battle between two masters and says that strong people are in no short supply. Listing all the Human combatants that have gone up so far, the other man says that it is a true honor to be selected for Ragnarok. The second man turns out to be Isami Kondo, Commander of the Shinsengumi. The first man turns out to be a fighter chosen for Ragnarok: Soji Okita, the Shinsengumi's First Division Captain. Smirking, Soji says he can't wait and wonders when his turn will be.
