Battle of Hulao Pass is the 4th chapter of the "The Legend of Lü Bu" manga series.

Summary[]

On 191DC, in Zhongyuan, Hulao Pass rumbles. Having turned Emperor Xian of Han into his puppet, Dong Zhuo aimed to grasp supremacy under the heavens. However, heroes from all over China revolted against him, such as Cao Cao Mengde, Liu Bei Xuande, the Sun Jian Army, Wang Kuang, Tao Qian, Ma Teng and Gongsun Zan. With the governor of the Ji Province, Yuan Shao, as their leader, they formed the Guangdong Coalition against Dong Zhuo, with their numbers being approximately 100,000. The opposing Dong Zhuo Army numbered a meager 30,000. Thus, the Battle of Hulao Pass commenced. And surprisingly, the one to gain the advantage at the start of the battle was the Dong Zhuo Army. Part of the vanguard for the Dong Zhuo Army, Captain of the Calvary Unit, Hua Xiong cuts off the heads of many soldiers and their horses. 500 members of the Cavalry Unit led by Hua Xiong advanced, as if they were flying through an empty field. Repeating how they're too small, Hua Xiong calls it laughable that the enemy is trying to oppose Dong Zhuo with such paltry forces. Hua Xiong then takes out a bottle of alcohol and begins taking a swig when a soldier willingly comes towards him on his horse.

The soldier reveals he's Bao Zhong and he instructs Hua Xiong to feel the power of his weapon, the Green Crescent Dragon Blade. With his naginata, Hua Xiong easily splits Bao Zhong and his horse in two. Mockingly declaring that the Yuan Shao Army doesn't even make a good appetizer to his alcohol, Hua Xiong orders the rest to leave. Frightened, they proceed to do so. Against the vanguard of Dong Zhuo's army, the vanguard of the Yuan Shao Army, numbering 10,000, were annihilated. In the right wing of the Guangdong Coalition, many of the Sun Jian Army are doing well in repelling the enemy. Wielding two sword-like clubs, Huang Gai Gongfu orders his allies to cut them all down. Suddenly, a soldier arrives and reports that the vanguard was taken down. Upon hearing the one leading them is Hua Xiong, Huang Gongfu calls that unlucky. Cheng Pu Demou says they have no choice but to stop him. Han Dang Yigong asks where their general is while Zu Mao Darong remains silent. Sighing, Huang Gongfu calls their general an idiot before all four of them spot Hua Xiong coming towards them, mowing down the Sun Jian Army. Surprised, Huang Gongfu says he's insane and Han Dang asserts he's a monster. Cheng Pu orders for everyone to disperse and surround Hua Xiong from the sides rather than attacking from the front. As he cuts off the heads of many soldiers, Hua Xiong says the Sun Jian Army is also much too small.

Seeing how fast he is despite being so big, Cheng Pu orders for everyone to aim for Hua Xiong since he advanced ahead of his own unit. The soldiers all run towards him but after taking in a big breath, Hua Xiong mows down everyone near him. Asserting he has no business with foot soldiers, Hua Xiong demands they bring him the one called Sun Jian. Charging in, Huang Gongfu says he'll be his opponent, much to Hua Xiong's amusement. Lifting up his naginata, Hua Xiong brings it down and Huang Gongfu crosses his swords to block the attack in time. Huang Gongfu apologises as their leader isn't here right now and asks if Hua Xiong can come back later. Since that is the case, Hua Xiong tells Huang Gongfu to die and applies more pressure, causing the legs of Huang Gongfu's horse to break. Hua Xiong criticises him for being frail before splitting Huang Gongfu's weapons and his horse in half. Huang Gongfu managed to jump off his horse and spin around in time for Hua Xiong's attack to only cut his right arm. Now that Huang Gongfu has no weapons, Hua Xiong tells him to leave his head and is about to kill him when he is forced to block an incoming spear. Noticing it cut his hand, Hua Xiong crushes the spear before looking in the direction the spear came from. Smiling, Hua Xiong asks who the new interloper is.  Sitting atop a horse is none other than the Commander-in-Chief of the Sun Jian Army, Sun Jian Wentai.

Huang Gongfu says that he's late and Sun Jian apologises. Lifting his pinky, Sun Jian reveals "she" wouldn't let him go. Cheng Pu is completely exasperated that Sun Jian was late because he was playing around with a woman when this is supposed to be a grand battle to decide the next ruler under the heavens. Sun Jian nonchalantly tells Cheng Pu not to be so jealous and the latter insists he isn't. Coming up to him, Hua Xiong asks if he is Sun Jian and Sun Jian confirms he is. Hua Xiong thinks about how Sun Jian is known as the "Fierce Tiger of Jiang Dong". He is the descendent of Sun Tzu, who wrote "Sun Tzu's Art of War" and at the young age of 17, Sun Jian won glory for himself by obliterating the pirates of Jiang Dong. Knowing Sun Jian is one of the greatest heroes of this age, Hua Xiong finishes his alcohol before crushing the bottle, calling this a good chance. As Sun Jian is impressed by his power, Huang Gongfu repeats how Hua Xiong is a monster. The other three offer to help but Sun Jian insists he'll be fine by himself. Taking off his shirt, revealing a quote from Sun Tzu's Art of War on his back, Sun Jian says that since Hua Xiong was the one who took care of his soldiers, as their leader, he'll be the one to get even with him. Knowing Sun Jian's head will make a worthy gift to Dong Zhuo, Hua Xiong swings his naginata but Sun Jian jumps off his horse in time, resulting in only the horse's head being chopped off.

After landing on the ground, Sun Jian proceeds to dodge many consecutive attacks. Annoyed by Sun Jian fluttering about, Hua Xiong attempts to strike him again but Sun Jian dodges once more. He admits that Hua Xiong's strength is peerless before stepping on his naginata. Unexpectedly, Sun Jian runs up the polearm of the naginata, towards Hua Xiong. Surprised, Hua Xiong lifts his naginata up but Sun Jian jumps off in time before landing back on the naginata and jumping off again. Spinning in the air, Sun Jian draws his blade as he says that both Hua Xiong's face and technique are barbaric. Sun Jian then lands on the ground, having sliced through Hua Xiong's torso diagonally, killing him. Sun Jian declares he has killed Hua Xiong and Huang Gongfu sighs about how he gets the best part every time. Seeing Hua Xiong is now dead, the rest of the Calvary Unit that had caught up, immediately retreat. Since he travelled here all the way from Jingzhou, Sun Jian decides he might as well return with Dong Zhuo's head. This causes Huang Gongfu, Cheng Pu and Han Dang to call him too arrogant and full of himself, all while Zu Mao still stays silent. Sun Jian suddenly feels a chill and looks up at a cliff overlooking the battlefield. Cheng Pu asks him what's wrong and Sun Jian says that there is something on the cliff. Huang Gongfu questions what it is. As a figure starts to emerge from the smoke on top of the cliff, the horses all begin getting restless. Looking at the man that has appeared, Sun Jian says he can't be compared to the barbaric monster that was Hua Xiong as he is a superb dragon instead. Riding a horse, Lü Bu looks down at Sun Jian.
