Atypical is the 90th chapter of the "Shuumatsu no Valkyrie: Record of Ragnarok" manga series.
Summary[]
Susano'o no Mikoto holds his right hand back, with the Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo pointed upright, while his left hand is held open out in front of himself. The Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo is a blade already cloaked in an exceptional sword pressure and the stance taken by the God of Swords wielding such an exceptional Divine Weapon was truly atypical, much to Soji Okita's shock. As Heimdall announces to the audience that Susano'o has taken an atypical stance against the Demon Child, Susano'o asks Soji if he also thinks this is cool, revealing this to be his trump card. With his feet slowly shifting away, Soji nervously smiles about how he's being forced back and recognizes that the sword pressure being given off is insane. Japanese Humans in Humanity's crowd note that is an incredible stance and they realize the stance he's taken is the stance that Susano'o has always been depicted to use in nishiki-e.
Kojiro Sasaki guesses the stance is for cutting his opponent in two once he enters Susano'o's range but Musashi Miyamoto brings up how he's never seen a stance like that in any school. Musashi supposes the stance it is most similar to is iai, prompting Hrist to ask what "iai" is. Kojiro explains to her that it's an ancient art where one meets an opponent's attack mid-swing before cutting them down – a style that is based entirely on receiving an attack. However, Musashi points out to them how the stance that Susano'o has taken and the iai that they are familiar with, are two completely separate beasts. Watching from one of the VIP rooms, Tsukuyomi no Mikoto rants over how disgraceful it is for Susano'o to use "that" technique: a technique he created whilst walking among Humanity. As he claims it makes his testicles shrivel when thinking about it, Amaterasu Okami smiles about how this will be worth the watch and wishes to see Susano'o's "super-secret special move."
Intrigued, Izanagi wonders how Soji will react. Beginning to sway, Soji says that is an interesting stance and guesses he'll end up in pieces the moment he steps into Susano'o's range. Soji smirks about how it's too bad his attack won't land, which causes Susano'o to challenge Soji on whether or not that'll happen. Soji seemingly begins to rush at Susano'o in a straightforward move, only to immediately step back right as he steps into the borders of Susano'o's range. Heimdall relays the fact that Soji keeps stepping in and out of range, as if he's toying with Susano'o, and wonders if Soji is aiming to slip through and cut him down without giving himself up as a target. As Soji runs around at just the borders of his range, Susano'o follows him while still keeping his stance, keeping his left hand in front of Soji at all times. Soji finds this incredible as he can't find even a single opening, despite the fact that all Susano'o is doing is sticking his hand out.
As Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo continues to gather up an intense pressure, Susano'o says he knew Soji would close in without fear but against "this," Susano'o believes trying to compare range is for naught. Susano'o moves his right leg forward and gets Soji into his range, much to Soji's own surprise that Susano'o is coming towards him on his own. As Susano'o begins to swing the Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo, Soji jumps out of his range and believes Susano'o's attack won't be able to reach him like this, only for a giant slashing wave to be emitted from the Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo, going beyond Susano'o's range as he swings it, which Soji tries to block with his katana. Soji ends up blasted away as the giant slashing wave destroys the surrounding buildings at the same time. Exhaling, Susano'o's trump is revealed to be known as Secret Technique: Ama no Magaeshi. A giant explosion soon follows Susano'o's attack and the members of the Shinsengumi are shocked by what happened, with Isami Kondo yelling out for Soji.
Sitting on the ground, as the dust begins to clear, with his left arm injured, Soji looks around the damage brought about by Ama no Magaeshi. Heimdall admits he is unable to understand what happened but shouts about how, with one stroke of his blade, the God of Swords has cut Kyoto to ribbons. As the Gods cheer Susano'o on, Hrist questions what kind of special ability he used to get that range. Kojiro tells her that wasn't a special ability: that was just Susano'o simply swinging his sword with speed and strength. Hrist can't believe it was just a simple swing and Kojiro agrees it's astonishing. Susano'o unleashed a full swing with speed and strength, cutting the air itself, and created a vacuum blade at the tip of his sword, which makes it as if his sword extended further.
The swing went well beyond the typical range, to the point where both Soji and Kyoto were cut to pieces. Amazed, Hrist asks if such a thing is possible but Kojiro doesn't think it's a question of whether it's possible or not. Rather, it's something only possible because it's Susano'o and the Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo. Kojiro even believes it's something they Humans can't fathom and says it must be the result of hundreds, or even thousands, of years, of Susano'o just swinging his sword again and again. While Susano'o truly loves the sword, he wouldn't have been able to achieve such a feat if the sword didn't love him back.
Susano'o is impressed Soji was able to react to Ama no Magaeshi despite seeing it for the first time and he recounts how Soji rolled to the side to avoid the wind blade, which is to be expected of the Bakumatsu's most greatest Manslayer. As Soji repeatedly huffs, Susano'o says he may have actually ended up in pieces if he tried to take the attack head-on. As his heart beats loudly, clenching his left fist, Soji realizes he would've been done for if he was even a second slower. Susano'o questions if even the Demon Child is afraid but Soji admits he's comforted by the sound of his heart racing. Susano'o displays some confusion and as his heart continues to beat loudly, Soji expresses how glad he is that he had accepted this death match. Smirking, as both his heart and blood pumps faster, Soji's sclera become red and he smirks at how, thanks to Susano'o, he can get even hotter.
Shinpachi Nagakura points out Soji's eyes are burning even redder than usual. Heisuke Todo exclaims he really looks like a demon as a dark red aura emanates from Soji and covers his katana, with the aura around his head taking the shape of horns. Soji begins jumping in place and Susano'o is surprised to find out about another side of the Demon Child. Susano'o declares he's burning up while Soji tells him to get fucked. The God of Swords knew he had woken up the Demon Child, or rather, the Sword Demon of "Truth.”
