The Gigantomachy (ギガントマキア, Gigantomakia) was a war between the Greek Gods and the Giants, who were being led by Gaia.
Overview[]
The root cause of this war is the result of the Titanomachy Tournament between the Titans and the Gods. In the final round of the Titanomachy, Zeus defeated his father, Kronos. Thus, he took Kronos' place and became Chief God over all Greek Gods. Unable to accept that outcome, the Primordial Goddess, Gaia started a war against the Greek Realm and led her spawn, the Giants. That is what is known as the Gigantomachy.
In the final moments of the Gigantomachy, Zeus led the Greek Gods against the Giants and won. What happened to Gaia is unknown. At the same time as Zeus led the Greek Gods into battle, the Titans broke out of Tartarus and begun to advance to Valhalla from Helheim to assist the Giants. However, they were single-handedly repelled by Hades.
Trivia[]
- The Gigantomachy was probably the most important battle that happened in Greek mythology. It was a fight between the Giants or Gigantes, sons of Gaea and Uranus, and the Olympian gods who were trying to overthrow the old religion and establish themselves as the new rulers of the cosmos.
