Hanemon Seki and Ken Seki worried their son Tarōkichi Seki still can't walk at three years old

Hanemon lived during the Tokugawa era of Japan in the 1700s. Though he was a man of a large build, he was not of the Samurai warrior class, but instead was a member of the farmer class. As such, he and his family lived a simple life in Shinano village. Still, Hanemon worked hard to provide for his family's well-being. When his son, Tarokichi, had been unable to walk, despite having grown over the age of 2, Hanemon expressed genuine concern over his son, to the point he outwardly suggested sending for the local doctor.

Hanemon later reacted joyously when he and his wife arrived home to see their son attempting to walk, which immediately switched to horror when his overly strong muscles broke his bones. However, he showed great pride in his son's refusal to give up and eventually being able to walk. After the Great Tenmei disaster struck, in which a nearby volcanic eruption sent a cloud of ash over the land, killing most of the vegetation and causing a famine, Hanemon still worked to take care of his family.
