When it's time to fight, you do so with your own will. That's what it means to be Spartan.

Leonidas to the Gerousia in The Rebel King

King Leonidas I is Humanity's representative in the ninth round of Ragnarok, going against Apollo.

Due to him turning against the Gods and disregarding the oracles, he is known as "Strongest Rebel in Human History" (人類史上最強のはんぎゃくしゃ, Jinrui Shijō Saikyō no Hangyakusha)[1]. During his time on Earth, Leonidas served as the "King of Sparta" (スパルタ王, Suparuta-Ō)[2] and he is widely considered to be its mightiest king.

Appearance[]

Befitting a Spartan warrior, Leonidas is a tall, muscular man with scars running across his body, with a distinct long one running along the right side of his face. He has a gruff beard similar to a goatee with a man bun behind his head.[3]

When in his quarters, he was wearing Hawaiian shirt wear and glasses to help him read.[4] Upon entering battle for the ninth round of Ragnarok, he wears clothes similar to that of a military soldier with camo pants, belts with pouches, heavy black boots and black shirt with buckle. In both instances, he is smoking a cigar in his mouth.[5]

Personality[]

Leonidas explains his hobbies

Leonidas shows all the hatred he feels for the Gods, especially for Apollo

Leonidas is a prideful and loud individual who sees himself as one of the strongest, if not the strongest, fighters of the Human race. When Brunhilde informed him that she was choosing him to be the fighter in the ninth round, he was uninterested: claiming he would be better off sent in the first or final round of Ragnarok.[6]

Leonidas hates being told what to do[7] and has no regard for something like fate. As such, Leonidas has an intense dislike for beings that try to dictate a person's actions such as the Gods, none of whom he had ever met or seen while on Earth. Specifically, Leonidas holds great hatred towards Apollo, as it was his oracle that prevented Sparta from mobilizing its full military might[8], which led to Leonidas and the 300 men that followed him having to sacrifice their lives at the Battle of Thermopylae. Upon learning that it was Apollo who was going up in the ninth round, he was instantly motivated to fight.[9]

However, Leonidas does respect stength and bravery. He was able to inspire all the Spartans to joining his fight against Persia with his speech, and grew respect for Apollo when he complimented him and felt pride in his scar.

Leonidas has stated he likes three things in this world: reading in a hammock, enjoying a glass of wine with some Spartan cheese and knocking haughty Gods down a peg, using his own two hands.[10]

Leonidas is the most selfish man across all of history, as he firmly believes that since a person can't choose how they're born, they can still choose how they live and die, according to what their soul wants. It is this belief that had been driving him to fight Apollo during the ninth round.[11]

Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: Out of the many human fighters of Ragnarok, Leonidas is considered one of the top strongest with Brunhilde having considered using him along with Qin Shi Huang and Michel Nostradamus to fight Poseidon, who was considered the "God of Gods", in the 3rd round of Ragnarok. In addition, Brunhilde claims he is the only person in 7 million years to defeat Apollo (though this could have been a feint to convince Leonidas to fight in the 9th round). Befitting the title of the Strongest Rebel in Human History, legend has it he managed to lead 300 Spartans into battle against millions of soldiers in 480 B.C. known as the Battle of Thermopylae and never surrendered or gave up against the odds. Naturally as a Spartan, Leonidas has trained since birth to hone his skills and strength for battle. Even after death, it can be presumed from the behavior of his fellow Spartans that he has continued such training.

Physical Abilities[]

Godlike Strength: Like many of the fighters of Ragnarok, Leonidas possesses immense strength thanks to his years of training as a Spartan and as their leader. This was first demonstrated when upon the start of Round 9, Leonidas was able to slam the ground with his shield with so much force that it left a large hole in the ground and covered the arena in a large cloud of dust.[12] When Leonidas switched to the hammer form, his Phalanx Nemesis attack was able to cause a large shockwave that was able to decimate and break apart the floor of the stage. While alive on Earth, Leonidas was able to shatter a giant statue of Apollo in a single punch, receiving only some slight blood on his knuckles. During the climax of Round 9, Leonidas' Phalanx Lambda was so powerful it caused a massive shockwave in it's wave, and was able to stop the arrow of Apollo's Argyrotoxos, ahtrough the Sun God still managed to punch through his shield, and leave a large hole in his abdomen.

Godlike Speed & Reflexes: While not as fast or reactive as fighters like Apollo, Leonidas has shown he is capable of feats of immense speed and reflexes. Leonidas' speed was first demonstrated right when Heimdall was saying "fight" with Leonidas having already leapt in the air and slammed his shield to the ground before Heimdall finished saying the word. The attack was so fast it left the audience in shock and despite Apollo effortlessly dodging it, he was surprised from the sudden attack.[12] Leonidas was even able to block and redirect one of Apollo’s arrows, which was a light speed, invisible attack, although Zeus states he was only able to do it because of the warrior instincts he honed.[13]

Godlike Endurance & Stamina: As the Strongest Rebel in Human History, Leonidas has multiple scars on his body to prove that he has managed to endure several injuries in his lifetime including across his face and his chest. When he attacked Apollo, Leonidas inhaled his cigar whole with it still lit and suffered no pain from the action.[12] When Apollo used his bow, Leonidas survived a barrage of his light speed arrows, which could kill a Human before they even feel pain, and still remained standing.[14]

Fighting Abilities[]

Spartan Warrior: Since the day he was born, Leonidas trained his entire life and afterlife for the sole purpose of combat and fighting. While his specific training regiment is not known, it can be assumed from the training regiment the Spartan Warriors were doing upon his introduction it involves heavy lifting with their entire bodies including their jaws and teeth.

Mental Abilities[]

Indomitable Will: As King of Sparta, Leonidas possesses an extremely strong and high willpower. The word "surrender" does not exist in the Spartan code. Leonidas fought against Apollo, receiving numerous fatal wounds, but he continued fighting until death.

Enhanced Charisma: Leonidas has a high Charisma, being able to lead 300 Spartans to the battle of Thermopylae to fight against the invading Persian army.

Supernatural Abilities[]

Golden Age: Being a Human soul in the afterlife, Leonidas maintains the appearance and skills that he had during what he considers was his peak.

Techniques[]

Aspis - Base Form:[5] The base form of Leonidas' shield is a metallic aspis shield, which is dark gray in color. Leonidas can either slam his shield into his opponent at close range or he can extend the shield by a chain to attack from afar. Aspis Base Form
Phalanx Asanatos Phalanx Asanatos (ファランクス・アサナトス, Farankusu Asanatosu):[15] Leonidas extends his shield by a chain and launches it at his opponent, in rapid succession. It is fast enough to leave behind afterimages.
Aspis - Saw Form:[16] The center portion of Leonidas' shield lifts up and multiple spinning blades come out of it. This allows the shield to be able to deal much greater damage. Leonidas transforms his shield
Phalanx Encos Phalanx Enochos (ファランクス・エンコス, Farankusu Enkosu):[17] Leonidas extends the chain of the shield with the spinning blades out and launches it towards his opponent from afar. It is strong enough that Apollo couldn't hold it back nor was he able to fully mitigate the damage with his threads.
Phalanx Enchos Prodigy Phalanx Enochos: Prodevo (ファランクス・エンコス プロデーボ, Farankusu Enkosu Purodēbo):[18] Leonidas embeds the spinning blades of his shield into the ground behind him before dragging it forward, towards his opponent.
Aspis - Hammer Form:[19] The two halves of the shield around the center portion detach and turn into six spider-like legs, that then join up to create a large metal ball. The ball extends out a bit to reveal a handle and Leonidas takes it out, now wielding a large hammer in his right hand and a shrunken shield in his left hand, both of which are connected to each other by a chain. Aspis Hammer Form
Phalax Nemesis Phalanx Nemesis (God of Destruction's Iron Hammer) (破神の鉄槌ファランクス・ネメシス, Farankusu Nemeshisu):[20] Leonidas lifts his hammer back before swinging it down on his opponent. The attack was powerful enough to completely shatter the entire ground of the fighting stage.
Aletheia Sparta (Shield of Truth) (真実の盾アリーシア・スパルタ, Arīshia Suparuta):[21] The entire metallic covering of Leonidas' shield is broken apart, revealing a standard-looking aspis shield underneath, that's engraved with a lambda. A dark aura is emitted around both Leonidas and the shield itself when it is activated. Alicia Sparta - Shield of Truth
Phalax Lambda Phalanx Lambda (ファランクス・ラムダ, Farankusu Ramuda):[22] Leonidas holds the shield up in front of himself before he makes a very straightforward charge at his opponent, creating a shockwave as he does. Though simple, it represents the essence of Sparta's Phalanx: an unceasing and unrelenting offensive charge that pierces straight ahead like a spear. This attack was powerful enough to counter Apollo's Argyrotoxos, though the shield ended up being destroyed in the process.

Equipment[]

Leonidas shield Aspis Shield:[23] A metallic aspis shield that is dark gray in color and is lined with black, provided by the Völundr of the 5th Valkyrie, Geirölul. Due to Geirölul's unique nature, Leonidas can transform his close-range shield into a longer ranged weapon if need be, allowing him to fight from a distance as well or turning it in other weapons such as a circular saw or a hammer for more varied attacks
