— Mary to her son in Birth of a Monster
|
Mary was a prostitute and the mother of Jack the Ripper.
Appearance[]
Mary is a beautiful and young-looking woman with long blonde hair reaching her hips. She wears a plain dress. However, she is described as "aged" by Anne and one of Mary's costumers, meaning she is older than she looks.
Personality[]
Mary is at first shown to be a kind and caring person as she didn't want to worry Jack after being hit, insulted and underpaid. Her true colors would be revealed after learning about Jack Smith's broken promise. It would be unveiled that she doesn't care about anyone but herself; proceeding to tell her son directly that she wished she aborted him. Despite the cruelty of her words, its been shown that this selfishness was likely born from the hardships and suffering she endured as a prostitute and her desire to escape from this situation.
Plot[]
Past[]
Mary was born in 19th century London either into poverty or fell into it sometime in her life, forced to become a prostitute in order to survive. Because of this job, she's had 5 children from different costumers, all of which she aborted. Soon, she meet Jack Smith, one of her costumers who was a struggling playwright. There, he makes a hollow promise that he'll come back for her to take her out of the slums once his plays become successful. Like many other costumers before, Mary also sired a child, but she chose to keep him alive as a connection between her and Jack Smith. She named the child Jack, after his father. For the next 12 years, Mary raised Jack as her hope in life, loving not him as a her son but as her tool, Jack, unaware of this as he sees the color of love in her either way.
Jack also grew up reading the sonnets of William Shakespeare, compiled into a book left behind by his father during his visit to the brothel. Mary makes her debut as a 12 year old Jack enters their room right as a costumer walks out, she having just been hit, insulted, and underpaid. Her son rushes to her in concern but she only responds by embracing him, insisting she's fine. However, once she sees Jack has a graze on his arm, she reacts greatly and rips a part of her blanket to act as a bandage, worrying what will happen if it gets infected. Afterwards, Mary cites that she can buy medicine with the money they have and tells Jack that he is her hope in this world after he thanks her.
Sometime later, Mary gets news that Jack Smith's plays have become successful and that he's now in the upper class, however he has also become married to a noblewoman, breaking his promise to Mary. She immediately starts breaking down and crying, causing Anne to come up to her room to see what happened. When Jack later comes in, Anne explains what happened and tells Mary it's her fault for believing in a 13-year old promise as she walks out of the room.
Later that night, as Mary sits silently on her bed, Jack attempts to comfort his mother but she shows her true colors and snaps back angrily, throwing a fit in which she yells that she wished she aborted Jack like she did with her previous 5 children. During this fit, she also tore up Jack's book and threw it at him, causing his head to start bleeding. This fit caused Jack his revelation that the love he saw in his mother was never directed towards him. Mary's color has also become polluted, becoming no different to the colors of the people who abuse Jack during his daily scavenging's.
In response, he proceeds to choke his mother, witnessing the color of fear for the first time in the process. Mary manages to break free and yell at her son but is immediately stabbed in the neck with a knife, ending her life. After her death, her body is cradled by Jack as he contently says that he loves her as well. In the same night, Jack goes to find his deadbeat father and murder him via slitting his throat before disappearing into the streets of London and becoming the infamous Jack the Ripper.
