— Soji Okita to himself in Cherished Place
|
Soji Okita is Humanity's representative in the tenth round of Ragnarok, going against Susano'o no Mikoto.
He is the "Shinsengumi 1st Unit Captain" (新撰組一番隊組長, Shinsengumi Ichibantai Kumichō).[1] He is one of, if not, the best swordsman of the Shinsengumi and is known as the ultimate "Manslayer" (人斬り, Hitokiri)[2] among all of Humanity.
Possessing a dreadful murderous instinct, Soji has been mentioned to be a "Demon Child" (鬼子, Oniko)[3] and in contrast to Susano'o, who's known as a "Sword God," Soji has also been dubbed a "Sword Demon" (剣鬼, Kenki).[4]
Appearance[]
Soji Okita is depicted as young adult man. His long, dark brown hair is tied back in a ponytail and dark brown eyes that glow in red when he activates Demon Child. He wears a black and white checker patterned scarf (black and red in the anime), and purple tone kimono underneath Shinsengumi Dandara haori and gray tone hakama pants. Most notably of all are his eyes which seem to possess a feline quality to them, as his pupils are slits. Although small-framed, his body is relatively quite muscular, albeit of lean mass.
Personality[]
Soji Okita loves to fight and can't wait to take the field in Ragnarok.
Soji's main trait seems to revolve around his hunger for battle against strong opponents and his love of fighting, which has been shown in multiple instances. At the end of the fourth round, Soji eagerly wondered when his turn would be.[1] During the fifth round, when Soji found Buddha and Kojiro Sasaki about to clash with Loki and the Seven Lucky Gods, Soji immediately asked to join in.[5] During the seventh round, as Qin Shi Huang fought against Hades, Soji expressed a desire to fight the Emperor after witnessing his ability to detect the cruxes of Qi.[6]
Alongside his desire for fighting, Soji also possesses a sense of justice. When Loki said the Gods will make things go their way, Soji judged him to be an "evil God" and wanted to cut him down because of it.[7]
Once his turn to fight finally came in the tenth round against Susano'o no Mikoto, Soji relished in the fact that he could fight with all he had and during the round, he smiled numerous times, all out of excitement from how much fun he was having against his opponent, despite the fact that they were in a fight to the death.[8][9][10] From his time on Earth, Soji's main regret has been the fact that he never got to die in a spectacular battle and succumbed to illness instead, never having been able to give it his all.[11]
Outside of battle, Soji has a generally polite personality and he deeply cares for those he's close to. Particularly the Shinsengumi and its commander, Isami Kondo, who took Soji in when he was a child and wholeheartedly accepted him, despite his predilection for killing.[12] Even when he was suffering through his illness, Soji spent countless days trying to practice the sword, all in hopes of being able to fight alongside his comrades once more.[13] Despite viewing himself as a monster, Soji made a promise to Isami that he'd become a true samurai[14] and it is a promise that Soji wishes to fulfill, even to this day.[15]
Abilities[]
Overall Abilities: As the Shinsengumi's First Division Captain, one who lived through the Bakumatsu era of Japan, Soji has been embroiled in fights to the death every day of his life. He's killed many men and skirted death countless times, leading to him becoming known and feared as the strongest swordsman of the Bakumatsu era and Humanity's Ultimate Manslayer.
Physical Abilities[]
Soji using the Demon Child to its full potential
Demon Child (鬼子, Oniko):[16] When Soji reaches the peak of his excitement, his heart starts pumping three times more blood than normal. This awakens the muscle cells in his entire body, allowing Soji to utilize superhuman abilities. As noted by Hermes, while in this state, Soji possesses enough power to slice an opponent in half.[17] A by-product of this process is that it causes Soji's eyes to glow red. Hindered by illness during his life on Earth, Soji was never able to use the Demon Child to even half of its true potential. But during the tenth round, thanks to having a healthy body, Soji was able to go past his previous limits and use the Demon Child to its fullest.[18] By pumping his blood even faster, the sclera of Soji's eyes also turn red while a dark red aura begins to emanate from the rest of his body, most notably around his eyes and from his mouth, giving others the impression that Soji is actually a demon.[19][20] Also, this ability gave him a "demon persona" within his subconsciousness that he can somehow speak to and by unleashing it, the power of Demon Child becomes even greater though by uniting with it they're able to release the full power of this ability to the point of overwhelming the Sword God, Susano'o no Mikoto.
- Demonic Speed and Reflexes: Thanks to the Demon Child, Soji is able to move at insane speeds, allowing him to easily confuse his opponents in many ways, like giving the illusion of disappearing and reappearing.[21] He can also jump and move with his reflexes at the same rate and deliver multiple slashes in the same moment. When utilizing the Demon Child at its full potential, Soji is easily able to create afterimages with his movements for his opponents to hit instead of him and when going all-out, he can move fast enough that all one sees of him is a blur.[22][23] After Soji used Demon Child Release, he gains a further boost to his speed, leaving behind multiple blurs and afterimages during his assault, unleashing 13-16 sword techniques in a single moment.
- Demonic Strength: Despite his lean build, thanks to the Demon Child, Soji gains supernatural amounts of strength. Each of his swings are able to slice an common opponent in a half, as noted by Hermes. When utilizing the Demon Child at its full potential, Soji's physical strength increases to the point where he was able to stop Susano'o from pushing him back when their blades clashed and instead, temporarily overpowering Susano'o to push the Sword God himself back.[24] After his boost in strength from Demon Child Release, Soji became strong enough to tear a chunk out of Susanoo’s left side and shattered his Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo. And later in the battle, he was able to replicate the ability of vacuum blade from the Ama no Magaeshi of Susano'o to create his Heaveanly Flight technique
- Demonic Durability: Due to the Demon Child, Soji is shown surviving attacks that can annihilate surrounding buildings. During round 10 against Susano’o no Mikoto, Soji was able survive getting grazed by Ama no Magaeshi, which decimated a good portion of the Kyoto era buildings in the arena and later survived a direct hit from Ama no Maegashi, Gathering Clouds, which scarred the left side of his body and left him incapacitated. After breaking Susanoo’s divine weapon, and Susano’o ends up drawing his invisible sword, Soji was able to survive getting his left arm and leg bone split in half and later taking the attack towards his chest with the same result.
- Demonic Stamina & Endurance: With the power of the Demon Child, Souji is capable of withstanding and quickly recovering from the tremendous damage of the Susano'o's techniques to continue fighting. Even when his demon persona mentioned that releasing all of its power would kill him, Souji was able to withstand it to perform a storm of powerful sword techniques on the Sword God that turned the tide of the fight. Also, not only did he survive the internal damage of Susano'o's Musouken technique towards his left limbs and even his chest, but Souji also had enough strength to keep fighting and inflict a final fatal attack on the Sword God thereby outlasting his opponent's endurance of the Musouken technique.
Fighting Abilities[]
Master Swordsman: Since he is the Shinsengumi's First Division Captain, Soji possesses incredible swordsmanship, to the point where he was considered strong enough to be able to fight in Ragnarok. He is considered the one who stands at the top of the manslayers of the Bakumatsu era, whose swordsmen Susano'o no Mikoto regards as the ones who honed swordsmanship to its peak to create the art of "manslaying". And true to that statement, Soji proved his skill during his fight against Susano'o. A unique, yet quite appropriate for his "art", Soji's sword style focuses majorly on overwhelming opponents with precise, yet powerful blows mixed with the supernatural agility he gains from Demon Child. Additionally, thanks to his near-death experiences, Soji gained the unnatural abilities of assuming a formless sword stance, whose moves are unpredictable and hard to track, quick reaction time towards moves meant to kill him and precognition of a slash to a vital point of his body. Furthermore, Soji created Ten'nen Rishin Style: Enpi Reiten, which is even more overwhelming than the normal Ten'nen Rishin Style. Soji's immense swordsmanship also allowed him to create a technique of the same concept of the Ama no Magaeshi of Susano'o.
Supernatural Abilities[]
Golden Age: As a Human soul in the afterlife, Soji possesses the appearance and skills that he had during his Golden Age, the age in which he was at his peak. However, since he was no longer bound by the illness that ravaged his body during his time on earth, Soji was able to rapidly improve his skills and surpass his previous limits. With the help of the Valkyrie Skalmöld, Soji's growth was accelerated even further, allowing him to reach his full potential.
