Primordial Odin to Yggdrasil in Yggdrasil

The Yggdrasil were a group of the four strongest Primordial Gods. Said to have "nigh-overwhelming and unmitigated power,"[1] in the distant past, the Yggdrasil attempted to annihilate the Gods but were sealed away by 77 of the other Primordial Gods, with their existence now long forgotten.

They consisted of Odin, the "God of Creation" (創造神, Sōzō-Shin), Ymir, the "First Giant" (原初の巨人, Gensho no Kyojin), Satan, the "Demonic Emperor" (おう, Maō) and Chaos, the "Overseer of Disorder" (混沌の主, Konton no Nushi)[2].

Overview[]

The Yggdrasil were composed of the four most powerful Primordial Gods: Odin, Ymir, Satan and Chaos. The strength of these four were so unparalleled that not even a majority of the Primordial Gods working together could stop them[3], forcing them to seal the four away instead.

Their leader was the Primordial Odin, whose name, power and wisdom have been inherited by the present-day Norse Supreme God, Odin.

The Original Ragnarok[]

The Eleven Primoridals declare the war

Yggdrasil and their supporters decide to annihilate the Gods

The worlds of Heaven and Earth, as well as the existence of the Gods themselves, were all created by the 88 Primordial Gods[4], with the Yggdrasil in particular, being the most powerful among those creators.

The Primordial Gods and the Gods lived together for a time until one day, Yggdrasil declared the lesser Gods had grown too abundant and unnecessary, considering them defectives. Thus, the Yggdrasil began to massacre the Gods. Seven other Primordial Gods supported the Yggdrasil while the remaining 77 stood against them to protect the Gods, leading to a civil war between the Primordial Gods.[5]

Gleipnir - Weave of Sealed Gods

Yggdrasil and their supporters are sealed away

The 77 Primordial Gods would eventually call Yggdrasil and its supporters to a wasteland at the edge of the world. It was there that the final battle between the Primordial Gods would take place, becoming known as "Ragnarok."[6] Though the 77 Primordial Gods fought for their lives, they were no match for Yggdrasil's might, leading to them invoking the spell of Gleipnir to seal the Yggdrasil and their seven supporters away. Before the seal could fully take effect, Odin decided the four of them should engrave their "runes" onto each of the treasures they possessed. They then released those treasures back into the world, where they were scattered, later becoming known as the Four Treasures of Calamity.[7] The Yggdrasil were soon sealed away completely, at the cost of most of the Primordial Gods' lives.[8]

The Revival of Odin[]

After what seemed like an eternity passed, a Nameless God located Odin's treasure, the Magic Sword Gram. The Nameless God was an ordinary God, who held a deep and dark ambition, and he proceeded to take hold of Gram. When he did, an immense energy began flowing into his body, causing his hair to turn grey and bursting his left eye.[9] The Nameless God then managed to pull Gram out, using the power and wisdom he obtained from the treasure to dominate the Norselands and eventually becoming known as the Supreme God, Odin, having taken the Primordial God's name for himself.[10]

Odin would later collect the rest of the Four Treasures of Calamity, beginning a plan to revive the Yggdrasil.

Trivia[]

  • Yggdrasil is a gigantic, mythical ash tree that plays a central role in Norse cosmology by linking the nine worlds together and also serves as the location where the Norse pantheon of deities hold court.
